Launch of Smokefree Pathway for hospital in-patients

A smokefree pathway, designed to prompt brief interventions for tobacco users, was introduced in NMDHB Medical Services on March 26

In the pathway short-term smoking abstinence during hospital stays is promoted and supported with provision of Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Cessation services are available for those wishing to make more permanent changes to their smoking habit.

With the patient≠s consent a copy of the pathway will be sent to GPs for each tobacco user admitted. It is hoped that practices will revisit smoking behaviors at subsequent consultations. The pathway will assist the Emergency Department, ICCU and the Medical Unit to fully implement NMDHB's Smokefree Policy and monitor practice.

It is expected that the pathway will prompt more consistent, effective interventions. As a result referrals to the Hospital Cessation Service and the utilisation of nicotine replacement therapy are likely to increase. Once established the Smokefree Pathway will be extended to NMDHB Surgical Services.
