Primary Mental Health Services in Motueka

Nelson Bays Primary Health is expanding Motueka services for people with mild to moderate mental health problems.

Doctors and Māori Organisations in Motueka will be able to refer to a new counseling service based in the new Central Medical Service on Talbot Street.  This will be a Mental Health Brief Intervention Service.

Mental health can be affected by multiple factors: physical, emotional and social. These factors vary overtime depending on the amount of pressure or emotional difficulties we are experiencing.  There is usually no single, specific cause and contributing factors may be hard to separate and identify. Often there has been emotional stress or difficulty adjusting to adverse events.  Early treatment is important and increases the chances of a rapid recovery. An emphasis on what strengths and abilities you have, to help you through this time will enhance your ability to maintain that recovery.

The Mental Health Brief Intervention Service will help any Motueka GP enrolled patient or Māori Organisation tangata whaiora aged 18 and over to address mild to moderate mental health issues. The referral must come from your GP or Māori Organisation and the counseling service will remain in touch the referrer throughout your time of support.  The service offers free access to a counselor with up to four sessions of support, assessment, treatment or referral to appropriate agencies.

This may include:

  • Strengths Assessment
  • Goal setting
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Psychosocial interventions
  • Stress / anxiety management
  • Education around illness and illness prevention
  • Problem solving skills
  • Referral to another agency if appropriate

Key Messages:

  • The Mental Health Brief Intervention Service offers short-term treatment and intervention, of up to four sessions in any 12-month period, for GP patients and Māori Organisation tangata whaiora who are affected by mild to moderate mental health problems.
  • This service is designed to provide a referral option that is responsive to need and assists with referrals to appropriate services where required.
  • This service is available to adults only, aged 18 and over.
  • This service is available to patients enrolled with any Motueka GP or tangata whaiora referred by Motueka Māori Organisations.  Only a Motueka GP or Māori Organisation may refer to this service.
