Pharmacy - Projects

Projects

Pharmacy Interventions

The Pharmacy Intervention Project arising from the NBPH Clinical Governance Group (CGG) meeting held on 18th September 2008 is to facilitate the resolution of problems relating to pharmacy intervention charges to patients. The Pharmacy Intervention Project has the objective of improving the accuracy of the information provided on prescriptions and in turn reducing the number of intervention charges to patients.

Disposal of Unwanted Medicines through Pharmacies (DUMP)

With the support of the NBPH Board and Clinical Governance Group, and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) Pharmacy Advisory Group, a local DUMP campaign, was formulated to run for one month, which would provide information about which prescribed medicines were not being taken (i.e. wasted), the quantity of these medicines, and possible reasons for wastage.

Service User Satisfaction Survey

The survey is a contractual requirement of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board‚s Pharmacy Services Agreement (section G.12) between pharmacies and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board.  The aim of the survey is to assess pharmacy users‚ satisfaction with aspects of the pharmacy they use e.g. access to and services they receive, with a view to reviewing services and the quality of care for patients and possibly improving where indicated and appropriate.

Pharmacy Workforce Survey

The role of Primary Care Organisations (PHOs) across the country is to lead and coordinate primary health care to meet the needs of their local population. To be able to best achieve this Nelson Bay Primary Health (NBPH) needs to be able to understand the unique traits of our community. This research of Community Pharmacists across Nelson Bays provides an excellent and valuable example of how NBPH is achieving this within best-practice model through undertaking research among that group. Recommendations from this research will assist NBPH in further developing its strategy and subsequent activity to better support pharmacists and the development of Pharmacy Services in line with the Primary Health Care Strategy (PHC) and the National Pharmacist Services Framework (NPSF).

Vitamin D Supplementation

Evidence indicates that supplementing older adults in residential care with Vitamin D reduces the risk of falling by approximately 28% (Robertson and Campbell 2007) and subsequently reduces the risk of fracture and hospitalization (Bischoff-Ferrari 2004). The aim of the project is to increase the numbers of older adults living in residential care facilities receiving Vitamin D supplementation with an overarching goal of reducing falls and fall-related injuries in this population, which will result in improved well being and reduced health care costs. The project is for one year and started 1st December 2009.

Smoke Free

Nelson Bays Primary Health practitioners are asking smokers to consider giving up smoking at every interaction with a health care provider and encourage pharmacists and pharmacy staff to support this by promoting smoking cessation at every opportunity.

Ask about the Elephant - Smoking is too big to ignore - (https://smokingcessationabc.org.nz)

This is an e-learning module on smoking cessation. The module was designed for registered health professionals in New Zealand, however, the module provides education to anyone on smoking cessation. It should take about 30 minutes to complete.
