Primary Mental HealthThe Brief Intervention Service (BIC) is available to people with issues related to mental well-being. It is a free service.
Referrals must come from a GP or a Māori Provider. People who use the service must be 18 and over with no existing acute and/or chronic mental health or addiction issues that need to be addressed by specialist services, i.e. Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Alcohol and other Addiction services. The service is focused on Moderate Mental Health issues such as Anxiety and Depression. It can also assist when mental wellbeing is affected by other factors including illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, lung disorders etc. The BIC service can address areas of concern where patients may require some assistance to cope with early diagnosis of illnesses, and with patients who may require support to make the necessary lifestyle changes required to improve the management of their conditions. On request, BIC also offers a service provided by a Māori comprehensive nurse with extensive experience of mental health and Māori models of care. These sessions may include:
