Primary Mental Health

The Brief Intervention Service (BIC) is available to people with issues related to mental well-being.

It is a free service.

pmh-pathway-sml:

Referrals must come from a GP or a Māori Provider.  People who use the service must be 18 and over with no existing acute and/or chronic mental health or addiction issues that need to be addressed by specialist services, i.e. Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Alcohol and other Addiction services.

The service is focused on Moderate Mental Health issues such as Anxiety and Depression.  It can also assist when mental wellbeing is affected by other factors including illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, lung disorders etc.   The BIC service can address areas of concern where patients may require some assistance to cope with early diagnosis of illnesses, and with patients who may require support to make the necessary lifestyle changes required to improve the management of their conditions.  On request, BIC also offers a service provided by a Māori comprehensive nurse with extensive experience of mental health and Māori models of care.
Early recognition, acceptance and treatment aid in quicker recovery and improved self management of conditions.  The BIC service offers patients 4 sessions and is based on the Strengths Model.

These sessions may include:

  • Counselling
  • Stress management
  • Anxiety and/or depression management
  • Decision making skills
  • Education around illness and illness prevention for people and their families/Whanau
  • Problem solving skills

The BIC service ends when any of the following occurs

  • The client has received up to 4 sessions
  • The client has been referred on to another service
  • The sessions are no longer required
  • The client fails to attend two appointments and has not made prior arrangements to cancel or reschedule
  • The client no longer resides in Nelson Bays
  • The client does not respond to communication and or attend appointments made (2 appointments)

GPs and Māori Health Providers can refer to this service. Please contact Martin Kane for more information, Martin.Kane@nelsonbayspho.org.nz, 03 539 1647.
