Health Promotion

Background

Inexpensive and cost-effective interventions can prevent 80% of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancers (World Health Organisation, www.who.int/healthpromotion/en/)
There is strong scientific evidence supporting the fact that a healthy diet, sufficient physical activity and smoking cessation are key elements in disease and risk factor prevention.

Promoting health

Health promotion strategies are not limited to a specific health problem, nor to a specific set of behaviours. NBPH applies the principles of health promotion to a variety of population groups, risk factors, diseases, and in a variety of settings. Health promotion, and the associated efforts put into education and community development are equally valid for prevention of communicable diseases, (e.g. injury and illness), as they are for prevention of non-communicable diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease and diabetes).
