Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

CAMHS is a dedicated team of health professionals working with severe mental health problems experienced by children and youth aged up to 18 years.  Particular priority will be given to youth at risk of suicide or attempted suicide.  Routine referral problems could include depression, anxiety, ADHD, adjustment and eating disorders. Treatments can include psychiatric or psychological consultation, a range of therapies, day hospital programme, or perhaps crisis intervention.

Provides services for people aged between 15 and 30 who are being troubled by symptoms of psychosis and who have not previously accessed help. We encourage community and health care referrals.

Supports five initiatives in the area of mental health: 1. CAYAD - Community Action on Youth & Drugs.  Objectives are to increase informed community discussion and debate on issues relating to illicit drugs, adopt effective policies and practices to reduce harm, increased capacity to support young people and a reduced supply of drugs to young people. 2. Mental Health Promotion: Promotional campaigns, education, and support of communities to boost awareness in community and workplace.  Facilitating training amongst health professionals. 3. COMPASS Advocacy Service: Provides peer support advocacy workers. 4. The White House:  community centre run by and for users of the mental health services.They provide information, advocacy, peer support, outings and activities, meeting rooms, support groups, shift work and training. 5.  Kotuku:  A crisis intervention peer support recovery service based in a house in the country and offering beds for up to four people at a time.  Offers an alternative to hospitalisation.  Maximum stay is 14 days. One peer support worker sleeps overnight.

A dedicated outpatient service for Maori tangata whaiora, providing a Maori clinical and cultural community/outpatient based assessment, treatment and consultation liaison service within a Kaupapa Maori framework for pakeke/kaumatua/tangata whai ora who have a diagnosed mental illness.  Addiction Intervention Service.  Liaison, consultancy and brokerage - provision of alcohol and drug information and harm reduction strategies.

Outreach (the Rural Mental Health Outreach Service): offers 24 hour crisis intervention, ongoing support, case management, and home- based support.  Available only in Golden Bay, phone 03 525 7647. - Employment Service: assists with vocational planning and training, work placement, and runs a supported employment agency.  Available only in Golden Bay, phone 03 525 7110.  Residential Psychotherapy Programme: offers Dialectical Behavioural Therapy.  A specialist psychotherapy programme which aims to help people who have not been able to find successful treatment options in mainstream.  Particularly useful for people with high levels of suicidal and self-harming behaviours.
