Falls In New Zealand
- Falls account for a number of significant injuries among all age groups
- Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation in the 65+ age group
- Falls in this age group account for Π of all ACC claims and 75% of injury related hospital admissions
BUT - most falls are preventable
The impact of a Fall is quite significant and can cause:
- Loss of independence and confidence
- Reluctance to undertake certain activities
- Fear of it happening again
- Financial and social implications
AND - most falls occur in the home
Falls Prevention was previously Tai Chi
While there were numerous strengths in Tai Chi, there were also numerous limitations. So ACC and Nelson Bays Primary health joined forces and developed a 'one-of-a-kind' programme.
Our goal for the new programme was to:
- Shift the focus of activity from Tai Chi to Falls Prevention
- Broaden the scope and accessibility across the region
- Improve impact, capacity, cost effectiveness and quality controls
And ultimately reduce impact and incidence of falls among the 65+ age group |
